6 Key Features of a HT Mounted Ball Bearing

High temperature applications require mounted ball bearings that don’t just withstand the heat, but that also ensure your application remains safe and operational…

Here are 6 key features to look for when choosing a high temperature (HT) mounted ball bearing:

  1. High Temperature Lubrication: A high temp bearing will still fail prematurely without the correct lubrication. Lube fill rates are typically 35 to 55%, but for low speed or frequent wash-downs, we recommend higher fill rates.*
  2. C4 Internal Clearance: C4 ensures there is more internal clearance to accommodate thermal growth of races vs. the standard C3 clearance.
  3. Heat Stabilized Races & Steel Cages (aka Retainers): Why? These can handle higher temperatures and the cage will not become brittle like polyamide or glass fiber cages.
  4. Anti-Rotation Pins on the Bearing Insert’s OD (Outer Diameter): These help to both align the insert easily and restrict rotation due to temperature fluctuations.
  5. High Temperature Silicon Bearing Seals: These provide added protection from elevated temperatures and corrosive environments up to 390F (200C). Stainless steel flingers are standard on PTI high temperature bearings and can be removed if needed.
  6. Clearly Marked and Tagged Housings: Last but not least, it’s crucial that those individuals installing and maintaining the bearing will recognize it as a high temperature bearing and will use the proper lubrication.

The Background: A well-established distributor supplies bearings, belting, electrical equipment and more for the electrical, power transmission, and automation industries. They regularly purchase a two-bolt flange mounted ball bearing for their customer from a competing manufacturer.

The Challenge: The distributor was becoming increasingly unhappy with longer lead times from their existing supplier and learned that the supplier was planning to discontinue the product. PTI’s local sales representative shared PTI’s lead times, pricing and standard part dimensions with the distributor. PTI’s price and delivery were satisfactory, but the length through bore (LTB) dimension was slightly longer than the customer’s application allowed.

The Solution: Two days after PTI’s Engineering Team received the required specifications from the distributor, they provided revised product drawings and shipped out a 3D printed sample. The 3D printed housing matched the customer’s needs perfectly, and they immediately placed an order for 1200 units.

The Result: The distributor recognized a 25% cost savings by switching to PTI, allowing for margin enhancement for the branch and a significant savings for their customer. Lead times were also significantly reduced:
