“Hallo Hannover!” – PTI Attends 2017 Industrial Trade Show

P.T. International Corp.’s President Darin Davenport and Regional Sales Manager George Dib recently returned from Hannover, Germany to attend the 2017 Hannover Messe Industrial Trade Show and meet with some of our key European business contacts and partners. The trip was focused on checking out the latest in Industrial Automation, meeting with some of our key suppliers, and visiting with customers.

Background: A major equipment manufacturer placed an order for 18 (9 expansion + 9 non-expansion) SRE-FB4-300 4-bolt flange mounted units. The units were destined for a land roller used in the Farming Industry to flatten land and compact the soil.

The Challenge: High levels of contaminants (dust, gravel, sand, etc.) are present in the application. And while the triple lip HNBR rubber seals that come standard are quite effective at keeping debris out, the customer wanted even more protection on both sides of the bearing to not only ensure longer bearing life, but to also help to prevent the seals from failing. However, a standard open end cover wouldn’t fit due to limited space at the back of the bearing closest to the roller.

The Solution: To protect the front of the bearing: PTI recommended a standard closed front cover. To protect the back of the bearing: PTI engineers designed a lower profile custom bolt-on back plate with a proprietary dust excluder seal. After sharing a 3D printed model of the back plate, which the customer promptly approved, PTI custom fabricated back plates for the application. PTI then drilled and tapped holes in the housings to accept both the front and back plate.

The Result: PTI shipped out the modified units. After installing and running the equipment for several weeks, the customer has since placed multiple orders for several hundred additional units.

Mounting Methods (Part 4 of 4): Tapered Adapter Sleeve

(This is the fourth and final installment of a four-part series examining the Four Shaft Attachment Methods for Mounted Ball Bearings…)

Let’s examine the fourth option: PTI GSH and UK series mounted ball bearings have a tapered bore and are secured to the shaft using a tapered adapter assembly. GSH and UK series tapered adapter assemblies consist of a tapered adapter sleeve, a lock washer and a lock nut. As the adapter is tightened using a spanner wrench, the adapter is drawn through the bearing and tightened to the shaft. Because the contact of the bearing is evenly distributed around the shaft, it provides the most concentric/ideal fit. Read on to learn more…

*Note: This bearing has the highest purchase price and will take the longest to install, but allows for minimal shaft damage and highest possible speeds with the least amount of vibration.

HOW TO INSTALL THE TAPERED ADAPTER MOUNTED BALL BEARING:

  • Slide the assembly onto the shaft
  • Hold-down bolts for adapter mounted units should be tightened after the bearing is locked to the shaft
  • Snug locking nut by hand on each bearing noting the hold-down bolt hole position.
  • Once positioned into place, tighten the adjusting nut, drawing the adapter through the bearing clamping down onto the shaft
  • Check mounting bolt holes to insure adequate bolt clearance will remain after tightening.
  • Reposition the bearing if necessary.
  • Take care to ensure the locknut is not overtightened, as this can eliminate the bearing internal clearance, resulting in premature bearing failure
  • Tighten to the proper torque per Chart 3 below (from our Mounted Ball Bearing Installation Manual)
  • Re-check hold down bolts after 24 hours of operation to insure nothing has loosened. This check should become part of periodic maintenance including re-lube intervals

DID YOU KNOW?

  • When tightening, the axial movement of the bearing will be less than 1/32” if starting from a snug position
  • Flange Bearings may require a shim behind the flange if a gap remains after mounting to avoid bearing pre-load.
  • L10 Life = the expected life of the bearing under normal conditions. Factors affecting bearing life include temperature, ambient conditions (presence of moisture, dust, dirt and other contaminants) and lubrication/maintenance practices.

Mounting Methods (Part 3 of 4): The Concentric Clamp Collar

(This is the third of a four-part series examining the Four Shaft Attachment Methods for Mounted Ball Bearings…)

Let’s examine the third option: PTI’s “CL” Series Concentric Clamp Collar mounted bearings use a black oxide coated collar and a slotted inner ring. When tightened, “CL” series units are concentrically locked in place without marring the shaft, allowing for reduced vibration.

  • Once the bearing is on the shaft, tighten the collar using an Allen wrench or torque wrench (to ensure locking torque is ideal – see Chart 4 below from our Mounted Ball Bearing Installation Manual)
  • Re-check tightness of the collar after 24 hours of operation to insure nothing has loosened. This check should become part of periodic maintenance including re-lube intervals

*Note: this shaft attachment method is unidirectional and NOT intended for reversing loads. Eccentric locking collar mounted bearings contact the shaft over a larger surface area compared to setscrew mounted bearings. This can reduce shaft damage and fretting corrosion.

HOW TO INSTALL THE ECCENTRIC LOCKING COLLAR MOUNTED BALL BEARING:

  • Slide the eccentric collar against the mating end of the insert inner race.
  • Snug the collar on the mating eccentric in the direction of shaft rotation.
  • Place a mild steel bar inside the hole provided by the collar and tap the collar sharply in the direction of shaft rotation and perpendicular to the shaft.
  • Tighten the setscrew in the collar to the proper torque (from our Mounted Ball Bearing Installation Manual).
  • To remove the bearing, loosen the setscrew, then tap the collar in the direction opposite the shaft rotation.
  • Re-check tightness of the setscrew and hold down bolts after 24 hours of operation to insure nothing has loosened. This check should become part of periodic maintenance including re-lube intervals.
