*Note: this shaft attachment method is unidirectional and NOT intended for reversing loads. Eccentric locking collar mounted bearings contact the shaft over a larger surface area compared to setscrew mounted bearings. This can reduce shaft damage and fretting corrosion.

HOW TO INSTALL THE ECCENTRIC LOCKING COLLAR MOUNTED BALL BEARING:

  • Slide the eccentric collar against the mating end of the insert inner race.
  • Snug the collar on the mating eccentric in the direction of shaft rotation.
  • Place a mild steel bar inside the hole provided by the collar and tap the collar sharply in the direction of shaft rotation and perpendicular to the shaft.
  • Tighten the setscrew in the collar to the proper torque (from our Mounted Ball Bearing Installation Manual).
  • To remove the bearing, loosen the setscrew, then tap the collar in the direction opposite the shaft rotation.
  • Re-check tightness of the setscrew and hold down bolts after 24 hours of operation to insure nothing has loosened. This check should become part of periodic maintenance including re-lube intervals.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Wrenches or drivers should be kept in good condition (flats not rounded over) to prevent damage to the set screws and to allow proper tightening.
  • Set screws can be replaced to maintain holding power without replacing the entire bearing.
  • L10 Life = the expected life of the bearing under normal conditions. Factors affecting bearing life include temperature, ambient conditions (presence of moisture, dust, dirt and other contaminants) and lubrication/maintenance practices.

HOW TO INSTALL THE SETSCREW MOUNTED BALL BEARING:

  • After the shaft is aligned, tighten both set screws by hand
  • Then tighten the set screws alternately until the torque is reached (see Chart 4 below)
  • After 24 hours of operation, check the set screw torque and re-tighten if/as needed to ensure full locking to the shaft

Customizing for the Client by Going Feet First – a Case Study

Background: Franklin Miller is a manufacturer of agricultural and waste water equipment. They created a new machine designed to reduce agglomerates for one of their customers that produces crop fertilizer.

The Challenge: Due to limited available space in the application, the OEM’s design incorporated five parallel shafts requiring SAF222 housings positioned so close together that the feet couldn’t fit properly within the equipment. The OEM’s distributor had difficulty finding a manufacturer capable or willing to help with the required modifications until they reached out to PTI.

The Solution: PTI engineers consulted with the customer and modified the SAF222 housings already in stock at PTI’s Charlotte, NC – USA headquarters to meet the space constraints of the equipment.

Modifications included:

1. Machined feet off housings to fit in the equipment – essentially creating a tapped base design
2. Extended cap screws to allow for mounting to structure
3. Match marked housing caps and bases for easy pairing
4. Used split seals for easier assembly and removal of the split blocks. This modification also allowed the gear box and motor to stay in place and for easier impeller repair.

The Result: Franklin Miller received the ten modified housings within two months of the distributor’s initial inquiry to PTI. The retrofits allowed the machine builder to mount the housings in succession while meeting their confined space requirements.

A local South Carolinian, George graduated with a B.S. in Business Administration/Computer Information Systems from USC Upstate and earned his MBA in Finance from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. George and his wife of 24 years reside in South Carolina and have 4 sons.

Understanding the Needs of Our Clients – A Case Study

Background: A large regional service provider maintains, retrofits, refurbishes, and distributes spare parts for street sweepers, highway maintenance vehicles and electrical service trucks. They purchase a variety of mounted bearings including a competing manufacturer’s two-bolt pillow block with concentric locking collar.

The Challenge: Pricing was steadily increasing each year, prompting the service provider to seek out a cost-saving solution that would also allow them to increase their own spare parts sales.

The Solution: After receiving a sample, PTI consulted with the customer and redesigned the pillow blocks to the client’s specifications. PTI recommended zerk extensions to allow for easier maintenance and greasing, and changed the original seal design to a nitrile rubber lip seal with a metal flinger to protect the bearing from the high amount of contaminants and wet environment common with the application. Additionally, PTI marked the housings with the service provider’s name to help them generate repeat business.

The Result: The PTI solution resulted in a 40% cost savings plus shorter lead times. The customer was very impressed with PTI’s response time, flexibility, and recommendations, which led to two more custom bearing design projects.

Product Availability When It Matters Most – A Case Study

When PTI’s on-call employee learned an aggregates manufacturer needed a large split block housing ASAP because of a conveyor failure on a Sunday, he immediately got to work…

The Challenge: One of a large cement and aggregates manufacturer’s Midwest plants was in operation on a Sunday morning when one of their large split block housings failed on the conveyor, halting operation. The manufacturer needed a replacement part as soon as possible, but their distributor learned that their existing supply base didn’t have any housings available in that size. It’d be a 10-12 week lead time to get a replacement.

The Solution: The distributor contacted PTI’s local sales representative, who then reached PTI’s after-hours service. Our on-call employee interchanged the competitor’s part number, checked inventory, and quickly confirmed that the required unit – a metric plummer block with a 240mm shaft (PTI Part No. SD3152TS) – was in stock at our warehouse in Charlotte, NC. The distributor then emailed a purchase order to us and coordinated transport with an air freight courier.

(The Solution continued): Because the housing just barely exceeded the air freight weight limit, we removed the cap from the base and packaged them on separate pallets. The courier transported the pallets to the airport to be shipped out that evening. The receiving airport freight department was closed for the night, so the housing was picked up early the next morning. It was transported 150 miles and arrived at the plant Monday morning at 8:30 a.m. local time.

The Result:
